"Seen as a leader in his high school years, Herb was elected president of the Student Government Association at Roanoke Catholic High School in Roanoke, VA. He continued to lead in various roles in student government and sports at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Upon graduating, Herb enrolled in the Army in January 1982. "

Herb served at home and abroad for over ten years: US Army 24th Infantry Division; Fort Stewart, Georgia; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Fort Meade, Maryland; Bangkok, Thailand; Fort Lee, Virginia. US Army Reserves serving two tours in Iraq and one in Virginia, being awarded a Bronze Star while in Iraq. Retired as Army full colonel, 2012. Hired as government operations officer by Department of Army Civilian Government Operations, Afghanistan, 2012-2014"
